Women's soccer routs Sweet Briar

Box Score

Sweet Briar, Va. -- Nine different players scored, and the University of Lynchburg women's soccer team didn't allow a shot in a 10-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Sweet Briar Saturday afternoon on the road.

Senior forward Alyssa Kopsidas (Rockville, Md.) scored her second and third goals of the season in the rout and assisted another, and sophomore midfielder Sarah Wescott (Midlothian, Va.) notched a goal and an assist.

Three Hornets -- junior defender Natalya Rodriguez (Woodbridge, Va.), sophomore defender Dana Seavey (Mendham, N.J.), and junior defender Sarah Barnes (Cary, N.C.) -- scored their first collegiate goals in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg established the match early as fifth-year midfielder Rachel Cooke (Charlottesville, Va.) scored exactly 2 minutes in on an assist by senior midfielder Kennedy Jakubek (Leesburg, Va.).

  • The Hornets broke it open midway through the first half, scoring four goals in a 10-minute span kicked off by senior forward Caitlin Mertens' (Succasunna, N.J.) 16th-minute goal, assisted by freshman midfielder Taylor Smith (Chesapeake, Va.). Rodriguez, Barnes, and Seavey scored the other three goals in the barrage, Kopsidas picking up the assist on the latter. Lynchburg led 5-0 at halftime.

  • Freshman forward Emma Hiett (Woodbridge, Va.) got things started after the break with an unassisted 47th-minute goal. Kopsidas scored both of her goals in the second half, and Wescott and fifth-year forward Hannah Olds (Wilmington, N.C.) also scored in the chapter.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will have a quick turnaround, heading back home to take on Salem in a non-conference match Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
