Volleyball goes undefeated at Shenandoah

Winchester, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg volleyball team went undefeated Saturday afternoon, winning 3-0 against the Wasps of Emory & Henry and 3-0 against the Shenandoah Hornets at an Old Dominion Athletic Conference tri-match at SU.

Junior libero Lauren Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va.) served up seven aces, made 44 digs, and collected four assists. Junior outside Sydney Frink (Chester, Va.) had another good day, collecting 26 kills and 21 digs. Senior outside Sydney Jamison (Williamsburg, Va.) showed her skill at the net, racking up 18 kills and four blocks.

 

THE RUNDOWN

Final 1: Lynchburg 3, Emory & Henry 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20)

Final 2: Lynchburg 3, Shenandoah 0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-18)

Records: Lynchburg (9-13, 3-5 ODAC), Emory & Henry (5-17, 2-7 ODAC), Shenandoah (8-14, 2-6 ODAC)

Venue: Wilkins Center, Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Match 1:

  • Emory & Henry took the lead 4-0 in the first match, but it didn't last long. Lynchburg went on a 12-point run with Stanford behind the service line to gain a 20-9 lead. The Hornets easily finished the set 25-17 over the Wasps.

  • Lynchburg snagged another quick win in the second after creating a 14-6 advantage.

  • The Hornets fell behind the Wasps, 19-12, but went on an 11-point rally with Stanford behind the service line again and finished the set, 25-20.

Match 2:

  • The visiting Hornets took over the first set, 25-22, after tying up the match four times.  

  • After settling into a rhythm Lynchburg and Shenandoah battled it out for the second set. Lynchburg held a solid 7-4 lead until Shenandoah turned it around and got ahead, 19-17. Lynchburg turned up the pressure after a kill from Frink tied up the match, 24-24. The visitors earned the next two points to win the set 26-24.

  • The third set went to Lynchburg as well, 25-18. Stanford collected 32 digs and junior middle Disa Haugsdahl (Warrenton, Va.) collected four blocks.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will be on the road again to face the Guilford College Quakers in Greensboro N.C., on Wednesday Oct 24 at 6:30 p.m.
