Men's soccer ousted from ODAC tournament

Box Score

Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team's run at a three-peat in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament came to an end Saturday afternoon in the semifinals with a 1-0 loss to third-seeded Bridgewater at Washington and Lee University's Watt Field.

The second-seeded Hornets held the advantage in every statistical category -- shots (24-5), corner kicks (9-0), and shots-on-goal (9-1) -- but after falling behind early, Lynchburg could never find the equalizer.

Bridgewater got on the board in the 11th minute on a free kick from Leo Alcantara. The 20-yard shot bent over the Hornets' wall and past the diving keeper into the corner of the net.

Eagles goalkeeper Quentin Boric earned his keep for the rest of the match, making eight saves to keep Lynchburg off the board. Senior defenders Ryan Pikunas (Chesterfield, Va.) and Austin Kues (High Point, N.C.) and junior midfielder Jack Ashby (Lewes, Del.) each recorded two shots-on-goal.

Lynchburg nearly capitalized on opportunities late. Ashby's 70th-minute header was barely tipped over the crossbar by Boric, and Kues' 89th-minute shot was also stopped, ending the Hornets' last effort.

Bridgewater moves on to play host and top seed Washington and Lee in Sunday's championship match.

Lynchburg finishes the season with a 13-2-2 record, the Hornets' third-straight season with just two losses.
