Men's soccer blasts Roanoke in rivalry showdown

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team scored twice in the waning moments to put an exclamation point on the Hornets' 4-0 blasting of Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Roanoke Tuesday night on Shellenberger Field.

Sophomore midfielder Ben Mackey (Leesburg, Va.) scored two of the Hornets' goals, while junior forward Hussein Osman (Charlottesville, Va.) scored his first goal of the season and assisted two others.

Freshman forward Joey Daly (Raleigh, N.C.) scored his first-career goal in the rout as well.

Lynchburg's defense posted its seventh shutout of the season, getting a pair of saves and a clean sheet from senior goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin (Stafford, Va.).

The seventh-ranked Hornets' out-shot their guests, 24-5.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: No. 7 Lynchburg 4, Roanoke 0

Records: No. 7 Lynchburg (7-0-1, 3-0 ODAC), Roanoke (4-3-1, 0-1-1 ODAC)

Venue: Shellenberger Field, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The match started on even footing, but Lynchburg began to put the pressure on as the first half wore on. The Hornets broke through in the 34th minute when senior midfielder Dan Friedberg (Blacksburg, Va.) won a ball in traffic and played it to Mackey, who beat the Maroons' keeper for a 1-0 Lynchburg lead. That would be the score at halftime.

  • Lynchburg assumed complete control after the break. Osman assisted Daly's goal in the 59th minute for some breathing room.

  • Mackey started the late barrage, finishing with 1:03 to play thanks to an Osman assist. Just 31 seconds later Osman took a centered feed from his cousin, sophomore forward Abibi Osman (Charlottesville, Va.), and scored his first goal of 2018.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will enjoy a weekend off before getting back to ODAC action next Wednesday, Oct. 3 with a trip to Randolph-Macon. The 4:30 p.m. match is the teams' first meeting since Lynchburg ousted the Yellow Jackets in overtime in last season's conference semifinal.
