Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- In a rematch of last season's NCAA tournament second-round blockbuster, 12th-ranked University of Lynchburg women's soccer made history repeat itself with another win over No. 9 Christopher Newport. The Hornets defeated the Captains, 2-1.
Senior duo Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, N.J.) and Kennedy Jakubek (Leesburg, Va.) paired up to create the Hornets' offense. Mertens scored both her goals in the second half, both on assists from Jakubek.
Senior goalkeeper Delia LoSapio had six saves in the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half proved to be a even match between the two nationally ranked squads. Neither could get a goal on the scoreboard.

Christopher Newport gained the advantage in the 68th minute with a goal from Gabby Gillis, assisted by Carson Pokorny. But the lead was short-lived after a shot from Jakubek was deflected by the goalkeeper and scored by Mertens in the 69th minute, tying the game back up at 1-1.

Lynchburg took control of the match in the 74th minute after a header from Mertens, again assisted by Jakubek. The Hornet defense was able to keep the Captains at bay and finish the game 2-1.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Hornets hit the road Saturday, Sept. 29 to face the Roanoke Maroons at 4 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown.
