Volleyball splits conference tri-match Saturday

Lynchburg, Va-- The University of Lynchburg volleyball team posted a 1-1 record Saturday afternoon during an Old Dominion Athletic Conference tri-match. Lynchburg lost the first match, 3-0, against the Roanoke Maroons and won the second match, 3-1, against the Royals of Eastern Mennonite.

Lynchburg had a tough start this morning losing to Roanoke in three sets, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23.

The Hornets wrapped up the day on a positive note defeating Eastern Mennonite, 25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17.

Junior outside hitter Sydney Frink (Chester, Va.) lead the team with 29 kills and 22 digs between the two matches. Junior Lindsey Lang (Poquoson, Va.) followed right behind, collecting 25 kills. Junior setter Erin Farina earned an impressive 82 assists and six digs. Sophomore middle block Natalie Lavelle (Wilmington, Del.) racked up 10 kills and totaled eight blocks.

Match 1 Final : Roanoke 3, Lynchburg 0

Match 2 Final: Lynchburg 3, Eastern Mennonite 1

Records: Lynchburg 6-8, Roanoke 10-5, Eastern Mennonite 3-12

Venue: Turner Gymnasium, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Match 1:

  • Roanoke went on a six point run early in the first set giving the Maroons a 7-2 lead. Lynchburg turned it around when they tied it backup and took the lead 17-20, but after several errors Roanoke barely won the set 26-24.

  • The Maroons stepped out to a 2-0 lead, after scoring nine of the last 10 points in the second set.

  • Lynchburg looked like they were going to have a promising come back after a service ace from Frink tied the score 20-20. The Hornets earned another three points before Roanoke got the ball back and won the final set on a service ace. 

Match 2:

  • Lynchburg stepped it up on their second match of the day against Eastern Mennonite. The Hornets won the first and second sets 25-18, but faltered in the third allowing the Royals to win 25-19.

  • Lynchburg brought it back in the fourth with EMU trailing behind 10-16. The Hornets never let up and won the set 25-17 with a block from freshman Emma Drake (Newsoms, Va.) and junior Disa Haugsdahl (Warrenton, Va.)

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will match up with Hollins University Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Roanoke, Va.
