No. 11 Carnegie Mellon tops women's soccer at Roanoke tourney

Salem, Va. -- The 16th-ranked University of Lynchburg's women's soccer team fought hard but fell 1-0 against No. 11 Carnegie Mellon on the first day of the Roanoke Invitational Soccer Showcase Saturday afternoon in Salem, Va.

Senior goalkeeper Delia LoSapio (Raleigh, N.C.) grabbed four saves, all in the first half. Lynchburg held the Tartans without a shot after intermission but were unable to put the equalizer on the board.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first half Carnegie Mellon out shot Lynchburg 5-1 and proved to be critical. CMU's Emily Tolmer scored the only goal of the game off a corner kick, assisted by Maddy Lui.

  • The Hornets had several attempts to close the gap in the second half with five shots and two corner kicks, but no one could find the back of the net.

  • Senior forward Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, N.J.) managed both Lynchburg's shots-on-goal.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will continue in the Roanoke Invitational Soccer Showcase tomorrow, taking on the Bulldogs of Adrian College at 3 p.m.
