Volleyball splits with Shenandoah, Emory & Henry

Emory, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team split a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference matches Sunday, as the Hornets topped the fellow stinging insect Wasps of Emory & Henry, 3-2, but fell to the Hornets of Shenandoah, 3-1, in E&H's King Center.

Lynchburg (14-8, 5-5 ODAC) started the day on a high note, taking the first set against SU before dropping the next three to fall, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19. The Hornets then battled host E&H to a 25-23, 25-22, 14-25, 21-25, 15-7 result that fell in Lynchburg's favor.

Senior libero Lauren Stanford anchored the Hornets' defense on the day, piling up 54 digs and 10 assists on the afternoon. Classmate Sydney Frink totaled a team-high 28 kills to go with 19 digs.

Shenandoah (8-16, 3-7) got 11 kills and 11 digs from Kate Poppo in the opening match.

Makayla Payne led Emory & Henry (7-14, 4-6 ODAC) with 14 kills and seven blocks.

Lynchburg will return to home court in Turner Gymnasium Wednesday, Oct. 23 with a 7 p.m. match against ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan. The Hornets will hold their Dig Pink match that evening.
