Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Michael Lyons tapped the ball over the goalkeeper's head and slid to finish the ball in the 93rd minute, leading University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team to a 1-0, overtime victory over Guilford in both teams' final regular-season match of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference season.
The goal was the senior's first as a Lynchburg player and came on Senior Night as the Hornets celebrated the 10 members of the Class of 2020.
Lyons finished a thread-the-needle through-ball from freshman Luke Mega, opening the valve behind which Lynchburg had put pressure all evening. The Hornets out-shot the Quakers by a 24-3 margin.
Lynchburg (8-4-5, 5-1-2 ODAC) dominated the OT period from its outset, however. The Hornets put a ball in the box in the first minute that junior Ben Mackey headed just high of the net, and after a reset, freshman Seth Dale drove inside the 5-yard-line before his shot was deflected just wide.
Off the ensuing corner, Lynchburg reset again in the offensive third, and Mega drove into the box and split the Quaker defense to find Lyons, who finished the goal and the match.
The win thrust the Hornets into a tie for third in the ODAC standings, and Lynchburg will carry the No. 4 seed into the upcoming conference tournament.
Lynchburg, winners of four straight matches, will play host to fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon Sunday, Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round. The Hornets beat R-MC, 4-0, on Shellenberger Field Oct. 9.
