Box Score Greensboro, N.C. — University of Lynchburg's volleyball team's 2019 season came to a close Wednesday evening with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-12 loss to fourth-seeded Guilford in the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
The No. 5-seeded Hornets (16-11) got a match-high 11 kills from sophomore Emma Drake, who hit a scalding .421 (11-for-19, three errors) in the match, but her hot hitting didn't carry over; Lynchburg hit just .072 as a team, thanks in part to the Quakers' 10 blocks.
Guilford (19-7) got 10 kills and nine digs out of Christian Ritter.
Things started poorly for Lynchburg as the hosts jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but the Hornets stormed back to tie the set, 10-10, and later, 13-13. Guilford then rattled off another 6-0 run.
Lynchburg hustled back to cut the score to 22-20, but the Quakers took three of the final four points to secure the early lead.
GC led early again, 7-2 to start the second, and carried a 12-5 lead midway through, cruising to a second-set win. It was more of the same in the third, as the Quakers stormed ahead, 13-4, and never looked back in the sweep.
Wednesday was just the fourth time Lynchburg was swept in the Hornets' 27 matches this season.
The loss brought some stellar Lynchburg careers to an end. Libero Lauren Stanford, who scored a match-high 14 digs Wednesday, wrapped up her career with 1,934 digs — Lynchburg's career record and third all-time in the ODAC. Her 147 aces rank fifth on the Hornets' all-time leaderboard.
Outside Sydney Frink, another all-conference honoree, finished seventh on Lynchburg's career kills list (929) and fifth all-time in attack attempts (2,698).
Setter Erin Farina wrapped up her career sixth all-time in service aces (136) and 10th all-time in assists (1,731).
Middle Disa Haugsdahl, who missed the end of the year due to injury, finished ninth on the program's all-time blocks board (202).
Lynchburg will now await the announcement of postseason awards, set to begin next week with the release of the All-ODAC teams.
