Men's soccer falls to No. 16 Mary Washington

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- A two-hour prematch rain delay put a damper on University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team Wednesday night as the Hornets fell, 2-0, to No. 16 Mary Washington in non-conference action on Shellenberger Field.

Jacob Lovinger and Kevin Conrad scored for UMW (4-1), which got a goal in each half.

Lynchburg (2-2) controlled much of the action in the early going, garnering four first-half corner kicks, but the Hornets were only able to shoot twice in the half.

The Eagles finally got on the board in the 45th minute, when UMW was fouled in the box and Lovinger converted the penalty kick.

Lynchburg controlled the early part of the second half as well and had chances to score, the best coming in the 65th minute, when sophomore Griffin Phillips got to the back post and headed a free kick into the net, but Lynchburg was called offsides on the play.

UMW added an insurance goal 4 minutes later as Conrad got a noggin on Noah Mazzatenta's direct kick and scored.

Junior goalkeeper Kyle Gallagher made a career-high six saves for Lynchburg.

The Hornets will be back in action Friday, Sept. 13 against No. 13 Oglethorpe on Shellenberger Field.
