Box Score Newport News, Va. -- Sarah Barnes gave University of Lynchburg's women's soccer team a lead just after halftime, Christopher Newport's Sarah Rhiel tied the match later in the second, and the No. 23 Hornets left Captains Field with a 1-1 draw against No. 2-ranked CNU.
After a scoreless first half of action, Lynchburg (4-2-1) earned a corner kick quickly in the second half. The ball was played back out by the Captains' defense, but Alyssa Rudy found Barnes in the box on a one-touch pass by Amanda Wigboldy, and Barnes finished for her third goal of 2019.
CNU (7-0-2) struck back in the 66th minute when Rhiel one-touched a ball from Emily Talotta to equalize the match.
The Hornet defense held from that point on, though, as Caitlin Dorsch made three of her 10 saves in the overtime periods. It was the second time this season Dorsch reached double-digit saves.
Lynchburg will hit the road again this weekend for the start of Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, a noon match Saturday at Washington and Lee.
