No. 23 women's soccer shut out by Washington and Lee

Box Score

Lexington, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked University of Lynchburg women's soccer team was shut out for only the second time this season as the Hornets fell, 3-0, on the road Saturday afternoon to the Generals of Washington and Lee University.

Lynchburg (4-3-1) fell behind early in the first half after W&L (8-0-1) started the scoring in the 12th minute on a goal from Laney Smith.  The Generals tacked on two more goals in the second half from Sophia Roche and Lindsay White to make the score 3-0, putting the match out of reach.

The Hornets were out-shot 16-9. Junior Emma Hiett had three shots, and senior goalkeeper Caitlin Dorsch made three saves on the afternoon.

The match was cut short in the 86th minute due to lightning in the area. Both coaches agreed to finalize the match and not play the last 3:54.

It was only the sixth time since 2010 that the Lynchburg women's soccer team lost to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent and the largest margin of victory for either team in the programs' last 16 meetings.

Lynchburg is back in action Saturday, Oct. 5 in an ODAC match at home against the Eagles of Bridgewater College.
