Allen's OT goal lifts women's soccer over W&L, 2-1

Box Score

Lexington, Va. -- Whether it is a blowout, a close nonconference match, or an overtime thriller, the Hornets have found a way to win.

University of Lynchburg women's soccer defeated Washington and Lee in overtime, 2-1, Friday night, and have won eight in a row. Lynchburg last earned eight-consecutive wins from Sept. 27 to Oct. 20 in 2017.

Both teams took eight shots in the first half, but the Generals made theirs count and carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

Six minutes into the second, Emily Santana took a shot, but the Generals goalie made the save. Neither team had an opportunity for 25 minutes after Santana's look on net, but that changed when Taylor Smith stood over the ball for a free kick in the 78th minute.

Smith approached the ball several times before finally taking a shot and nestling it safely into the right upper-90 of the goal, tying the game up at 1-1.

Neither team found the go-ahead goal in the final 12 minutes of regulation as the Hornets prepared for their second overtime game of the season.

Amanda Wigboldy, the team leader with nine points, subbed into the match to begin the first overtime period.

The Generals earned the first dangerous scoring opportunities four minutes into overtime, but Hayleigh Casey blocked a shot and Jade Lecklider made a save on another, keeping the Hornets alive.

In the 96th minute, the hero from regulation, Taylor Smith, played a ball up to Wigboldy. The senior from Lynchburg, Va. fired a pass backwards, finding Alix Allen in front of the net. Allen took Wigboldy's pass and buried it in the right side of the goal, lifting Lynchburg past W&L for the first time since Oct. 31, 2018.

The Hornets are currently receiving votes (53) in the D3soccer.com poll. They are undefeated in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and have won eight-straight matches.

Lynchburg (8-1, 3-0 ODAC) hosts Randolph on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
