No. 22 women's soccer sees win streak end

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- For the first time in 39 days and 11 matches, University of Lynchburg women's soccer lost.

The 22nd-ranked Hornets fell 1-0 to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first half, Lynchburg dominated time of possession and took two shots on goal. The Hornets kept control of the ball all half by playing all ten field players across midfield. However, with seven seconds left, the Marlins scored on a breakaway and stole the lead before halftime.

Virginia Wesleyan kept their momentum out of the break. The Marlins took three shots 15 minutes into the second half, but Jade Lecklider saved the only ball on target.

After weathering Virginia Wesleyan's attack, the Hornets zoned in on grabbing the equalizer. Alyssa Damato took Lynchburg's first shot on net in the second half at the 69:29 mark. Taylor Smith followed up Damato's shot with a quality look of her own, but the Marlins goaltender made a sprawling save.

With five minutes remaining, Lynchburg made one final push. Amanda Wigboldy got behind the goalie, but a Virginia Wesleyan defender stepped in the way of her shot. Wigboldy added in two headers in the 86th and 87th minute, but missed the target both times.

The Marlins gained possession after Wigboldy's second header and possessed long enough to snap Lynchburg's ten-match winning streak.

The Hornets (10-2, 5-1 ODAC) celebrate homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 16 against Roanoke at 4:30 p.m.
