Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- No. 25 University of Lynchburg women's soccer celebrated eight seniors on Saturday afternoon, but fell to Bridgewater 1-0.
The match carried huge implications in the conference and the region. Lynchburg is in first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings and Bridgewater is in third. Also, both teams appear in the NCAA Regional Rankings. The match immediately lived up to expectations as both teams opened with intensity after the kickoff. Amanda Wigboldy and Alix Allen took shots in the first minute of play.
Despite Lynchburg's fast start, Bridgewater stole an early lead after tucking a ball between Jade Lecklider and the post for a goal in the sixth minute.
The Hornets outshot Bridgewater 9-5 after conceding the goal, but went into halftime trailing 1-0. Emily Santana had the best scoring opportunity of the first half, but her point-blank shot was saved.
Lynchburg continued to barrage Bridgewater with shots in the second half. The Hornets took four shots just five minutes into the resumption of play. Maddy Myers took the fourth shot of Lynchburg's early scoring outburst and hit the crossbar.
Lynchburg did not allow Bridgewater to take a shot in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 14-0 in the final 45.
With four minutes left in regulation, Meghan Lauder almost found the equalizer. Sydney Dombrovskis played Averey Wyscarver from the corner. Wyscarver found Lauder in front of the net and the freshman from Chapel Hill, N.C. took two quick shots on target, but Bridgewater's goaltender saved both.
Bridgewater held on for the win and beat Lynchburg for the second-straight time.
The Hornets finish out the regular season with two road matches, beginning with a visit to Roanoke, Va. to take on Hollins on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m.
