Six men's soccer players score in win over Bridgewater

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Six different University of Lynchburg men's soccer players scored goals Tuesday night in the Hornets' 6-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over visiting Bridgewater on Shellenberger Field.

Luke Mega put the Hornets ahead early, netting a goal in the 11th minute on a Nick Foley assist, and Foley quickly doubled the Lynchburg lead in the 28th finishing a Kenny Robles corner kick to put the home team in control of the match.

Lynchburg added a third goal before halftime on a 36th-minute penalty kick by Joey Daly and held a 3-0 advantage midway through.

The Hornets added another tally shortly after halftime thanks to Michael Rendon's penalty kick goal and then scored another in the 62nd minute, a Carl McAninch goal assisted by Cesar Acosta and Cameron Clairmont.

Bridgewater broke up the shutout in the 67th minute on a Josh Gilliam goal, but Lynchburg pushed the deficit back to five in the 69th when Zach Whelan put away a goal assisted by Trevor Miller and Enrique Morales, making it 6-1.

The win was the seventh straight for the Hornets (12-4-1, 8-1 ODAC) but their first home victory over Bridgewater since the 2016 season.

Prior to the match, the Hornets recognized the five seniors in the Class of 2022: Griffin Phillips, Rendon, Patrick Pikunas, Daly, and Justin Ennis.

With the victory, the defending conference champions cemented the second seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament. Lynchburg will play host to seventh-seeded Shenandoah Saturday in the quarterfinal round at a time to be determined.
