Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team picked up its first win over Mary Washington since 2013 on Wednesday, a four-set 25-21, 19-25, 25-15, 25-23 victory over the Eagles.
Mya Green led the Lynchburg stat line with her sixth double-double of the season (46 assists, 18 digs), while Abbi Leeper and Khoury May highlighted the Hornet attack with 18 and 12 kills, respectively.
After a tight first set in which the Hornets pulled away late on a 5-0 serving run by Green, Lynchburg (7-9) fell behind early in the second and never recovered as Mary Washington closed out the set to tie the match at one apiece.
The Hornets retook control in the third, jumping out to an early 8-4 lead on the momentum of four kills by May. She and Leeper both finished the third with six kills as the Hornets rolled, 25-15.
Lynchburg leapt out ahead early again in the clincher, but the Eagles rallied to tie the set at 8-8 to ensure a dogfight. The set score was tied on 12 occasions in sum, but Lynchburg looked to be in control, leading 21-17 after a Leeper kill. But UMW rallied back to take a 23-22 lead, forcing a Hornet timeout. Lynchburg quickly recaptured the momentum after the brief break, putting a bow on the victory with a set-tying kill by Leeper and a pair of May kills to win it.
The win snapped a five-match losing streak against Mary Washington and came eight years and a day after the most recent victory over the Eagles, Oct. 5, 2013.
The Hornets will now embark on a four-match road streak, all taking place within Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. That roadtrip will kick off Friday with a 6 p.m. showdown at Randolph-Macon.
