Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Bhayle Kearns scored twice, highlighting the efforts of four University of Lynchburg men's soccer players who found the back of the net in the Hornets' 5-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Ferrum Saturday evening on Shellenberger Field.
Kearns opened the scoring for the Hornets in the 16th minute, chasing down a cross from Kenny Robles and heading it into the back of the net to put the home team ahead in the early going. The fifth-year made it a 2-0 Lynchburg lead in the 36th minute with another header, this one assisted by Zach Whelan.
The Hornets carried the lead into halftime, but FC pulled within a goal in the 50th minute on a Nicholas Berruti goal.
The two teams alternated strikes for the remainder of the match. Manzi Shalita volleyed a rebound off Brennan Lagana's shot to make it 3-1 Lynchburg in the 56th minute before Ferrum closed the gap again in the 60th. Shortly after, Luke Mega beat a gaggle of Panther defenders to push the score to 4-2.
Leo Gaplin's 81st-minute goal for Ferrum again brought the deficit to a single goal, but the Hornets gave themselves some breathing room in the final 60 seconds when Brennan Lagana earned a breakaway and beat the Panther keeper to bring the tally to its final standing.
Lynchburg (7-4-1, 3-1 ODAC) is scheduled to continue its homestand Wednesday, Oct. 13 with a 7 p.m. match against Guilford in a reprise of the 2020-21 ODAC championship.
