Dombrovskis' goal sends women's soccer to ODAC semifinals

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg women's soccer advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinals after beating Guilford 1-0 Tuesday evening.

The match began with cloudy skies and scattered showers, but Lynchburg's scoring opportunities were anything but spotty. The Hornets took eight shots before the 20th minute.

Maddy Myers provided the best scoring chance in the first half. The junior midfielder took a shot on target but Guilford's goalie redirected the ball off the crossbar. Lynchburg took another shot on the rebound but the ball sailed high.

The Hornets went into the break tied at 0-0 and leading the contest in shots, 15-2.

Lynchburg nearly doubled their efforts in the second half, taking 24 shots compared to Guilford's one. However, the Quakers forced overtime.

Playing in their first conference tournament overtime match since Oct. 31, 2018 and second overtime match of the season, the Hornets did not hold back. Myers tallied two more shots in the first overtime period while the rest of the team poured in three. The Hornets' five shots in the first overtime marked their most in an overtime period this season.

The skies finally cleared out just before the second overtime. Soon after the sun came out, the Hornets lined up for their ninth corner kick of the match.

In the 102nd minute, Taylor Smith played the corner into the box and several players from both teams converged on the ball. Lindsey Grady headed the ball down, but her shot was blocked. Sydney Dombrovskis was next in line. The freshman forward found the back of the net and flexed as she sent her team to the ODAC semifinals for the first time since 2018.

Dombrovskis earned her team-leading sixth goal of the season and third game-winning goal. She also leads the squad with 16 points this year.

The Hornets used 47 shots, their second most of the season, to get past Guilford for the 17-straight time.
