Men's soccer tops Virginia Wesleyan to reach ODAC final

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Luke Mega gave the team the lead with a first-half penalty kick goal, Kenny Robles scored twice in the second half, and University of Lynchburg advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship match with a 3-0 semifinal win over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday evening on Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets dominated the first half, out-shooting their guests by an 11-0 margin, and broke through when Mega earned an PK in the 23rd minute. He took the shot himself and put it in the back of the net to give Lynchburg a 1-0 lead the hosts took into halftime.

After intermission, Virginia Wesleyan put on the pressure in the early minutes before Lynchburg retook the momentum. Robles doubled the lead in the 55th minute on a Joey Daly assist, finishing a cross right in front of the goal. He added another in the 89th minute, chasing down a Seth Dale throw-in and hitting it in from near the right end line.

Lynchburg returns to the ODAC championship match for the third consecutive season and looks to repeat its 2020-21 title. The Hornets, this year's No. 2 seed, will play host to fourth-seeded Randolph College at 2 p.m. Saturday on Shellenberger Field.

It will be the second time the crosstown rivals meet in the ODAC championship; the WildCats beat Lynchburg for the title in 2011.
