Box Score Harrisonburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team opened the 2021 spring season with a bang Tuesday on the road, beating Eastern Mennonite by a 6-0 margin in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.
Sophomore forward Luke Mega scored twice for the Hornets, while sophomore midfielder Kenny Robles dished out two assists.
Lynchburg (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) broke through in the 19th minute to open the scoring after senior defender Nick Foley intercepted a pass at midfield and found Robles ahead on the right side. Robles' through-ball squeaked through to Ben Mackey in the open field, and the senior finished from the top of the box for a 1-0 Hornets lead.
After another sustained attack, Lynchburg earned a corner kick in the 41st minute. The ensuing ball deflected out to Patrick Pikunas, and the junior unleashed a long shot that was blocked. The rebound fell right to Brennan Lagana, who finished at close range to double the margin.
The second half was all Mega. The reigning ODAC rookie of the year got the ball north of midfield in the 67th minute and beat three EMU defenders and the keeper to score. Fifty-eight seconds later, Mega chased down a long ball from Robles and finished with the outside of his foot from short range to earn the brace.
Two Hornets -- freshman Nick Musumeci and sophomore Liam Lovell -- scored their first-career goals in the waning minutes of the match.
Lynchburg out-shot the Royals (0-1, 0-1 ODAC), 31-5.
The Hornets will return to play Thursday, March 4, when they will make their 2021 home debut against rival Roanoke at 7 p.m.
