Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team shut out the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champion Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets 1-0 at home Thursday night.
Lynchburg found plenty of opportunities to take shots in the first half of action as the Hornets (4-1, 3-1) totaled eight shots in the first 45 minutes but none found the back of the R-MC net. The Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-1) took five shots and the only one on frame was saved by the Hornet goalkeeper, freshman Katie Pierson. The two teams played to a scoreless tie going into the break.
After a Yellow Jacket's foul in the 64th minute, junior Alix Allen took the free kick for the Hornets. Allen played it into the R-MC box to sophomore Sophie Walsh who found fellow sophomore Maddy Myers as she finished the shot in the upper right corner of the Yellow Jackets' net, putting the Hornets up 1-0.
With three minutes left in regulation, Taylor Smith almost doubled the score for the Hornets after the junior's shot hit off the crossbar, but could find the back of the net. The Hornets totaled 16 shots on the night, with Smith taking four of them. Myers, Lindsey Grady and Ida Swisher took three shots each but it was Myers' goal that led the Hornets to victory.
Lynchburg women's soccer will be back on the pitch on Sunday, March 21 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day as the Hornets play host to Shenandoah University.
