Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team battled rival Roanoke College to a scoreless draw Thursday evening in the Hornets' 2021 opener on Shellenberger Field.

Lynchburg (1-0-1, 1-0-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) out-shot the Maroons by a 14-10 margin, but neither team was able to break through. 

The Hornets' best chance at a goal came during a sustained attack in the waning minutes of the first half, when Lynchburg managed four shots in a two-minute span. Ben Mackey nearly put the Hornets on the board in the 42nd minute when the senior beat Roanoke keeper Zach Behe to a ball in the air and headed it sharply goalward, but the Maroons' Joe Carman cleared it off the line with a header of his own.

Lynchburg also had a string of three straight corner kicks early in the second overtime period but were unable to square up a shot.

The Maroons had a few chances of their own, especially late. Roanoke forced Hornets keeper Kyle Gallagher to make three of his seven saves with the match on the line. The senior held up for his seventh-career shutout, though, and both teams came away with a point in the ODAC standings.

Mackey and sophomore Luke Mega took three shots each for Lynchburg.

Lynchburg's men's soccer team will continue ODAC play at home Sunday when Virginia Wesleyan comes to town for a 4 p.m. match.
