Lynchburg, Va. -- Nick Foley scored with 45 seconds remaining to put University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team ahead, but No. 22 Christopher Newport responded with a last-minute goal of its own; the non-conference rivals played through two extra time periods to a 1-1 draw Friday night on Shellenberger Field.

Both teams' defensive units played fantastically for the first 89 minutes of the match, stymying every attack the offenses mustered. But Foley helped the Hornets break through after a counterattack led to a Lynchburg corner kick with just over a minute to play. Kenny Robles delivered a good ball into the box that rattled around off heads and feet until it fell to Manzi Shalita, who took a shot that was deflected left to Foley, who found the open right side of the net with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation. It was the first goal of the season for the graduate student defender and the third of his career.

CNU didn't have long to respond, but the Captains didn't need much time either. The visitors launched an attack at midfield, and Cory Hogge collected a rebounded shot off the crossbar and pushed it past the defense to equalize with just 5 seconds on the clock.

The teams went to extra time and played 20 more scoreless minutes to draw for the second-straight meeting between the two regional powers.

Both goalkeepers played admirably, as Kyle Gallagher made four saves in net for the Hornets and Cole Irvin made a pair for the Captains.

Lynchburg (2-0-1) will have a quick turnaround in search of their third win of the campaign; the Hornets will head to Lexington Saturday evening for a non-conference matchup against No. 11-ranked Washington and Lee. That match is set for 7 p.m.
