Box Score Lexington, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team rallied late to tie the match, but the No. 11-ranked Washington and Lee Generals scored the golden goal in the second period of extra time to secure a 2-1 victory Saturday night.
The match did not count toward the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings.
W&L broke open the scoring in the 32nd minute on a John Peterson goal. Lynchburg keeper Kyle Gallagher stymied any further damage with four of his six saves before the halftime whistle, but W&L took that 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Generals held the lead well into the second half and threatened to add on, taking nine shots to Lynchburg's three in the period. But the Hornets broke through in the 80th minute. The ball found its way into the box after a Hornets corner kick and was mishandled by the W&L keeper. The ball fell right to Carter Averette, who finished low to even the tally.
The deadlock lasted until the 108th minute, the second overtime period, when Michael Katsanzira chased down a through-ball from Peterson and scored low to the far side of the net to win the match.
The Hornets will travel back to Lexington on Saturday, Oct. 2 in an ODAC match, but first, the Hornets will travel to Georgia for a pair of matches with regional powers Oglethorpe and Emory University.
