Box Score Atlanta, Ga. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to host Emory University Saturday on the road as the Eagles scored with 14.5 seconds to go, breaking a scoreless tie.
Josh Berman found the end of an Ethan Cohen cross on a breakaway and put it in the back of the net to hand Emory U. the last-minute victory.
Lynchburg started the match as the aggressor, earning three corner kicks and four shots on goal in the opening half. But the Hornets were stopped each time by Eagles goalkeeper Jack Hudson, who made four of his seven saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Perhaps the best Hornets chance came on a flurry of pressure between the 21st and 25th minutes, culminating in a pair of Hudson saves and a corner kick for the Hornets on which the visitors were unable to capitalize.
After halftime, Lynchburg again pressured the Eagle defense, forcing Hudson to make an early save and being called thrice for offsides. Then, the Emory attack turned the tables. Hornets keeper Kyle Gallagher was called into service, directing the defense through eight Eagle corner kicks and making five of his six saves in the second stanza.
The late goal materialized seemingly out of nowhere. Emory sustained some pressure in the waning minutes, but the Hornets looked to have dodged the worst of it after flushing out a trio of Emory shots and a corner kick in the 86th minute.
Lynchburg earned a corner of its own in the 88th but was unable to get a shot off, and the Eagles controlled possession back to midfield, where Cohen made his run with the ball. His pass from the right side split a pair of Lynchburg defenders and found Berman inside the box, who was able to score with 14.5 seconds to go.
Luke Mega led Lynchburg offensively, putting three of his four shots on frame; Bhayle Kearns added three shots for the Hornets.
The loss pushes Lynchburg's record to 3-2-1 on the young season. The Hornets will look to get back in the win column Wednesday with another roadtrip, this time to with a trip to Mary Washington for a 4 p.m. kick.
