Men's soccer falls to Mary Washington

Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision on the road Wednesday afternoon to Mary Washington, conceding a couple of late goals to fall out of striking distance in the waning minutes.

Neither team controlled the early going as the first 15 minutes of the match were played largely in the midfield, but UMW's Josh Kirkland beat the Hornet defense left and finished into the right corner of the goal in the 17th minute to give the Eagles the early lead.

Lynchburg withstood more pressure from the Eagles as the first half wore on, waiting out a 45-minute lightning delay late in the half before returning to send the match into halftime facing a 1-0 deficit.

The Hornets stymied UMW's attack in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza as well and turned the table around the 56-minute mark to sustain some offensive pressure of their own. The Hornets launched a pair of shots on goal in the 58th minute but were turned away both times by Eagles keeper Ken Kurtz.

Mary Washington took the momentum back later on, adding goals in the 75th and 80th minutes to secure the victory.

Lynchburg (3-3-1) will return home to Shellenberger Field next time out, Saturday, Sept. 25, to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against Eastern Mennonite at 7 p.m.
