Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team started the Old Dominion Athletic Conference portion of its schedule off on the right foot Saturday evening with a 5-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite.
Five different Hornets found the back of the net in the winning effort, starting with a sixth-minute goal by Luke Mega. The junior chased down a deep Nick Foley ball over the defense and beat the charging Royals keeper with a lob over his outstretched arms.
Lynchburg doubled the lead in the 17th minute when Joey Daly served a corner kick to the near post that Griffin Phillips headed into the net, and the Hornets struck again just before the halftime bell, this time a Foley header off a well-delivered free kick from Daly to lead 3-0 at intermission.
The Hornets (4-3-1, 1-0 ODAC) opened the second half with another score, a 49th-minute strike from Kenny Robles, who finished a through-ball off Mega's foot.
Josiah McCaskill put an exclamation point on the win in the 89th minute, taking a Royals defender one-on-one, beating him to the right, and delivering a curving strike into the right side of the net for the sophomore's first collegiate goal.
The Hornet defense put together a strong effort, holding EMU to just two shots as Justin Ennis and Noah Gregory teamed up for the shutout between the pipes.
Lynchburg's 21 shots were a season-high, and the five goals were the most for the Hornets since April 11, when Lynchburg topped Guilford, 5-1, for the 2020-21 ODAC title.
Prior to the match, the Hornets honored longtime Eastern Mennonite head coach Dr. Roger Mast, who is retiring at the end of the season, and presented the two-time ODAC champion mentor with a Lynchburg men's soccer jersey.
