Men's soccer tops Maryville for second-straight win

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- A pair of Luke Mega goals bookended the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team's 3-1 victory over Maryville Tuesday evening on Shellenberger Field.

Mega got the scoring started early for the Hornets shortly after Lynchburg earned a throw-in deep in the Scots' third of the field in the eighth minute. Brennan Lagana's long heave found Bhayle Kearns, who headed the ball from the near post to his rear, and Mega one-timed it with his head into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Lynchburg lead.

Maryville quickly evened the tally, though, on a Craig McIlwraith goal in the 15th minute, but the even score didn't last long.

The Hornets earned a corner kick in the 25th minute, and the delivery was knocked out toward Manzi Shalita at the top of the box. The sophomore took a shot that was blocked by a Scots defender, but senior Griffin Phillips won the ball in a scrum and finished with the eventual game-winner.

The match went into halftime and well into the second half with the Hornets leading, 2-1, but Lynchburg wasn't done on the attack. The Hornets kept sustained pressure for much of the second half and finally broke through again in the 86th minute. Kearns unleashed a flurry of shots after another Lynchburg corner, the last of which was saved but bounced across the front of the goal to Mega, who redirected the carom into the net for some late Lynchburg insurance.

It was the second-straight victory for the Hornets, and Lynchburg improved to 3-0-1 on its home turf this season.

The Hornets will hit the road next time out, though, and will face a tall task in doing so; Lynchburg will square off with No. 1-ranked Washington and Lee in Lexington Saturday afternoon at 1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference row. The Hornets and Generals have already played one dandy this season, a 2-1 Generals victory in overtime September 11.
