Box Score Newport News, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team exploded for four goals Sunday en route to a comfortable 4-1 win over Greensboro at the Steve Shaw Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University.
Four different Hornets found the back of the net. Bhayle Kearns started off the scoring frenzy, stepping to a Brennan Lagana cross in front of the box in the second minute of the match.
Lynchburg (2-0) added two more goals before the half; Lagana scored thanks to a Kenny Robles assist in the 13th minute, and Zach Whelan scored his first collegiate goal in the 45th minute with a helper from Liam Lovell.
Lovell and Whelan switched roles for the Hornets' fourth goal of the day, this one in the 88th minute, but GC spoiled the shutout less than a minute later thanks to a well-placed Jordy Briceno free kick.
Lynchburg controlled all facets of the match, out-shooting the Pride 20-8 and earning nine corner kicks to Greensboro's three.
The Hornets will return home to Shellenberger Field for their next match, a 4 p.m. tilt Friday, Sept. 10 against Christopher Newport.
