Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team dropped its home-opener Wednesday night, falling to Southern Virginia, 25-15, 29-27, 25-15, in non-conference action.
The Hornets got 11 digs and three aces from freshman libero Jordan Bartemeyer, but SVU's block held the Lynchburg offense at bay throughout the match. Lynchburg had just 30 kills as a team to go with 30 attack errors, and the Knights teamed up for nine blocks in the sweep.
Lynchburg did enjoy one high point in the match -- Wednesday marked the first time in nearly two years that the Hornets played in front of a crowded Turner Gymnasium.
After losing the first set wire to wire, Lynchburg (1-3) rebounded in the second set. The stanza featured 15 ties, and the Hornets, trailing 21-18 late in the set, stormed back to tie the score at 21 and eventually forced extra points. Lynchburg had a chance to close the set after an Emma Drake kill gave the hosts a 27-26 lead, but SVU responded with a 3-0 run to keep a chance at the sweep.
The Knights jumped out to a 9-4 lead to force a Hornet timeout and then followed the break with an 8-3 run to pull away for the sweep.
Khoury May had a team-best nine kills for the Hornets, and Abbi Leeper had seven kills and nine digs. Taylor Breeden served up 17 assists as well.
Courtney Pinkston put down a match-best 11 kills for the Knights.
Lynchburg will look to turn the tables next time out, a tri-match Saturday at Messiah University against Gettysburg and the host Falcons.
