No. 24 men's soccer shuts out rival Roanoke

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Brennan Lagana and Trevor Miller each netted first-half goals, the defense turned in a clean sheet, and the 24th-ranked University of Lynchburg men's soccer team left Shellenberger Field Saturday evening with a 2-0 victory over Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Roanoke College.

The Homecoming victory became likely in Saturday's early going when Manzi Shalita played a ball over the Maroons' back line that Lagana tracked down in the box. The junior finished low to put Lynchburg on the board in the 11th minute.

Lynchburg continued to pressure the RC defense throughout the first half, accruing three corner kicks and six shots, until the Hornets broke through again in the 40th minute. Shortly after earning its second corner of the half, Lynchburg got back on the board. Sebastian Quiroz-Gutierrez delivered a ball into the box near the right post, and the leaping Miller got his head on it before Roanoke's keeper could punch the ball away. The strong header sailed netward and doubled the Lynchburg lead, marking Miller's first goal of the season.

It was all the Hornets needed. The host team's defense held the Maroons scoreless behind six saves from Justin Ennis in goal, the senior's second shutout of the campaign.

At halftime, the program celebrated a pair of special teams from Lynchburg men's soccer's past. The 1971 team gathered on Shellenberger Field to commemorate the anniversary of its victory over University of Virginia on the way to a state collegiate championship that season. The 1976 team, which was inducted into the Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame Friday as a Team of Distinction, also received recognition for its accomplishments, which included the first-ever ODAC championship in the league's founding year.

The 2022 iteration of the Hornets, now winners of three straight matches and still unbeaten on the year, will hit the road Wednesday for Guilford in search of consecutive win No. 4.
