Women's soccer battles No. 18 W&L to draw

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg women's soccer played 18th-ranked Washington and Lee to a scoreless draw Wednesday afternoon.

Junior goalkeeper Jade Lecklider made five second-half saves to keep the Hornets in the match. She has not allowed a goal at home in four-straight matches.

The two teams traded harmless chances in the early going until Lynchburg started racking up corner kicks. Ida Swisher lined up for the second corner of the match in the 28th minute. W&L cleared out the initial cross, but Sophie Walsh connected on the other end of it and put a shot on frame. Walsh beat W&L's goalkeeper Sydney Smith to her left, but Bryn Bissinger earned the defensive save to keep things scoreless.

Lynchburg pressured for two more corners in the first half and boasted three shots on goal to W&L's zero. However, the Hornets went into the break in search of their first goal in two matches.

As the clock crept downwards out of halftime, both teams dialed in and played an evenly-matched second half.

The Hornets needed to fend off two back-to-back W&L corners to open the final half and did so without conceding a shot on net. Lecklider was called on to make her first save in the 65th minute. She made four more stops within 7:12 during the later part of the final half to earn her seventh individual shutout of the year.

On the other end of the field, Lynchburg fired off 11 shots including two strong shots from Emily Santana

Lynchburg's final chance came in the 88th minute during its ninth corner of the match, but the Hornets could not find the go-ahead score. Lynchburg's six draws this is a new season-high after drawing five times in 2009.

The Hornets (8-3-6, 6-1-2 ODAC) are in fourth place in the conference standings and host Randolph-Macon in the regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
