Volleyball's season ends in ODAC quarterfinal

Box Score

Lexington, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball season came to an end Wednesday night with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-23 defeat at third-seeded Washington and Lee in the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.

Bree Spainhour put down a match-high 14 kills for the Hornets, and Abbi Leeper's six kills helped the senior become just the 10th player in Lynchburg volleyball history to top 900 on a career.

Cassi Blackmore had 18 digs toward Lynchburg's cause, and Morgan Clarke tallied 14 digs and two aces for the sixth-seeded Hornets.

The first set was closely contested in the early going, but a 5-1 W&L run built the Generals a lead they never gave back up. Spainhour had three kills for the Hornets.

In the second, Lynchburg took control early. A Kailey Keough kill gave the Hornets a 7-3 advantage, but Washington and Lee quickly responded. The Generals ripped off eight straight points for an 11-7 lead they did not relinquish. Spainhour had kills on her final three swings of the set to bring her match tally to eight, but W&L's Lillie Holcomb put the second away with a kill of her own.

Lynchburg also commanded early in the third; the Hornets rushed out to a 6-1 lead behind a pair of Spainhour's kills and Clarke's two aces. W&L fought back with a 5-0 string of its own, and the two teams were locked in a dogfight from there. A Spainhour kill tied the set at 17, sparking a 4-0 Lynchburg run that forced a Generals timeout. W&L cut the lead to 21-20, but Princess Salifou spiked a kill and teamed up with Keough for a block to make it 23-20 Lynchburg. The Generals recovered, however, and scored the last five points to complete the sweep.

The Hornets finish the 2022 season with a 15-12 record and were 7-5 in ODAC regular-season play. Lynchburg will look forward to postseason awards, beginning with Sunday's announcement of the all-conference teams.
