Volleyball tops Pfeiffer, falls to unbeaten William Peace

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Raleigh, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team continued its early-season road trip Saturday, splitting a pair of non-conference matches in a tri-match at William Peace University.

The Hornets began the afternoon with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 sweep of Pfeiffer before battling to a 27-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-20 defeat against unbeaten William Peace.

Abbi Leeper put down 31 kills over the two matches, and Mya Green had a pair of double-doubles with 35 assists and 11 digs against Pfeiffer before totaling a career-high 19 digs to go with 41 assists in the Peace match. Cassi Blackmore collected 39 digs on the day.

Lynchburg hit for a season-best attack percentage of .347 in the opening win over Pfeiffer, highlighted by Leeper's match-best 14 kills. The senior swung for a .406 attack average. Lynchburg's middles were on fire as well. Princess Salifou hit .462 with eight kills, and Sophia Rucker put down nine while hitting an even .300. Both had three blocks, as did Leeper. It was the Hornets' second sweep of the young season.

Saturday's late match proved tougher for the young Lynchburg team. The Hornets jumped out to a 23-19 lead in the first set, but William Peace rallied for a 4-0 run to tie the score and eventually won the set, 27-25.

After a dismal second set, the Hornets rebounded in the third. Leeper had five of her 17 kills in the victorious set, and Salifou put down four of her nine in the stanza as well as Lynchburg locked down a 25-20 win to avoid the sweep. The Pacers rebounded to win the fourth, however, and the match. Blackmore's 23 digs led five Hornets in double figures in the category, joining Green (19), Abbey Barlow (16), Jordan Bartemeyer (10), and Kailey Keough (10). Keough also had seven kills.

The loss snapped Lynchburg's five-match winning streak against William Peace, a streak that dated back to the 2001 season.

Lynchburg (4-2) will continue its season-opening tour Wednesday as the Hornets open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 7 p.m. match at Guilford.
