Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team stayed undefeated on the young season Sunday with a convincing 4-1 victory over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan on Shellenberger Field.
Things started off poorly for the Hornets as NCWU's Tommaso Illario scored on a 25-yard free kick that deflected off a Hornet defender and into the back of the net in the seventh minute.
Lynchburg knotted the score on a similar play in the 10th minute, when a Brennan Lagana free kick bested the Battling Bishop defense. The Hornets added another goal in the 16th minute for the ultimate game-winner, a Manzi Shalita ball across the box that Zach Whelan finished at close range. Lynchburg took the 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Hornets wasted little time adding insurance in the second half. Lynchburg got the ball into the offensive third quickly and earned a throw-in; Lagana's long throw got into the box, where Whelan put a head on it. Standing near the back post, Lovell smoothly deflected the ball with his heel into the left side of the net for a highlight-reel goal.
Luke Mega added the Hornets' final score on a sequence again begun by Lagana's long throw in the 86th minute. The junior's heave sailed into the box for the waiting Shalita, who one-touched it across to Mega for the finish. It was Lagana's Old Dominion Athletic Conference-leading fourth assists of the season.
Lynchburg (2-0-2) will look to remain unbeaten in 2022 Wednesday with a road match at William Peace.
