Box Score Frederick, Md. -- Three University of Lynchburg men's soccer players scored their first-career goals Saturday as the Hornets routed Hood, 6-1, in a road non-conference match.
Freshman Carson Boyd scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, for the first two goals of his collegiate career, and junior Enrique Morales and senior Wilson Bowles also found the back of the net for their first times in a Lynchburg uniform in the winning effort. A more familiar goal-scoring name, All-American Luke Mega, had the other two Hornet scores.
Mega got things started for Lynchburg in the 22nd minute with an unassisted goal, and Boyd's strike came almost exactly 10 minutes later, scoring shortly after a free kick that Sebastian Quiroz-Gutierrez served into the box. Lynchburg held a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Boyd wasted no time getting the Hornets some insurance in the second half. Just 57 seconds into the period, the freshman got on the end of a Zack Koenig pass and scored his second of the match. Mega scored again in the 49th minute, unassisted, and Morales joined the party in the 67th minute, putting away a Jonathan Pulido assist to erase any doubt as to the outcome.
Hood broke up the shutout when Ryan Stewart scored in the 75th minute, but Bowles' first goal as a Hornet pushed the deficit back out to five in the 87th minute when the senior tracked down a Trevor Miller through-ball and shot a dart that cleared the keeper's outstretched arms and snuck under the crossbar.
Lynchburg (3-0-3) will look to remain unbeaten in 2022 Wednesday with a 7 p.m. home match against Mary Washington. Both teams received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll.
