Box Score 2 Fredericksburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches on the road Saturday, falling to perennial power Stevenson in four sets in the morning before suffering its first sweep of the 2022 season in the afternoon at the hands of host Mary Washington.
Mya Green had another double-double for the Hornets in the 25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 loss to Stevenson to open up the day. The sophomore collected 33 assists to go with 13 digs for the Hornets, while Abbi Leeper led the Lynchburg offense with 14 kills. Libero Cassi Blackmore registered a game-best 26 digs for Lynchburg, Kailey Keough added 15 digs and five kills, and Bree Spainhour put down 10 kills for the Hornets.
The match did not open up in Lynchburg's favor, the Hornets falling behind by a 19-13 score before a timeout sparked a 7-1 Lynchburg run. The teams traded the lead back and forth before Lynchburg put the set away with three straight points to win, 27-25. Leeper had a pair of kills in that final 3-0 run to put the Hornets in an early lead.
The Mustangs, who received votes in the latest NCAA Division III poll, rallied to win three straight sets, however, and the match.
Lynchburg could not piece it together in the nightcap, hitting just .083 as a team in the 25-21, 25-14, 25-20 loss to the host Eagles. Green had another double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs, while Keough collected eight kills and 12 digs for the Hornets. Blackmore dug out 14 UMW attack attempts to again lead the Hornets in that category.
The Hornets (5-5) will look to climb back over the .500 mark Wednesday with a return to league play at Old Dominion Athletic Conference newcomer Averett. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
