Box Score Glassboro, N.J. -- Ida Swisher intercepted a failed clearance in the 87th minute, took a touch to dodge a defender, and uncorked an arcing 20-yard shot that beat the keeper to lift University of Lynchburg's women's soccer team to a 1-1 season-opening draw at Rowan Friday evening.
Swisher's goal erased a lead the Profs got in the early going thanks to Olivia Giordano's 15th-minute score.
Otherwise, both defenses were stellar. Lynchburg managed just three shots in the first half and held Rowan to only two. The Hornets nearly netted the game's first goal in its first 10 minutes, but freshman Mac Joly's shot was cleared off the line by the defense.
Rowan then mounted pressure and earned a foul just outside the box. The Profs played the free kick into the box, where Giordano took a shot that Hornet keeper Jade Lecklider saved. Giordano tracked down the rebound, however, and put it in the back of the net for a Rowan lead.
Neither team managed much of a scoring threat for the rest of the first half, but Lynchburg turned up the pressure after halftime. The Hornets took eight of their 11 shots in the second stanza but were unable to break through until Swisher's bender in the late going. It was the first-career goal in a homecoming of sorts for the junior defender from Downingtown, Pa.
Swisher and Joly led the Hornets with three shots apiece, while Lecklider made a pair of saves in net.
Lynchburg (0-0-1) will stay in the Garden State for a 6 p.m. tilt at Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.
