No. 25 men's soccer stings Randolph-Macon

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The 25th-ranked University of Lynchburg men's soccer team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a bang Saturday evening, earning a 4-1 win over Randolph-Macon on Shellenberger Field.

Carter Averette, Liam Lovell, and Luke Mega each scored a goal and made an assist for the Hornets in the win, which extended Lynchburg's win streak against its conference rival to nine straight matches.

Lynchburg got on the board in the 17th minute, pressuring the Yellow Jacket defense with the ball near the end line outside of the box. Some slick passing got the ball to Mega, who reversed field across the top of the box to Averette, who found a window through the defenders and put away his first goal of the 2022 season.

Just 34 seconds later, the Hornets struck again. Averette played a through-ball to Brennan Lagana near the left post, and the junior finished low for an early 2-0 Lynchburg lead.

Randolph-Macon's Yoni Ramirez broke up the shutout in the 43rd minute, tracking the ball down in a scrum and beating the Hornet defense to make it a 2-1 match at the half.

Lynchburg regained the momentum early in the second stanza, and Lovell made use of it. The senior capitalized on a Zach Whelan assist to give the Hornets some breathing room in the 55th minute. Mega then scored a goal of his own in the game's final minute, tracking down a sharp through-ball from Lovell on the right side of the box and finishing right-to-left for a 4-1 tally.

The Hornets (4-0-4, 1-0 ODAC) will continue conference play on the road Wednesday with a trip to Winchester for a 7 p.m. match against Shenandoah.
