Box Score Lynchburg Va. - The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team fell to Virginia Wesleyan University 1-0 on Saturday night.
The Marlins offense owned the early scoring chances throughout the first 20 minutes of play recording four shots to Lynchburg's zero. Manzi Shalita saw the golden scoring opportunity for the Hornets in the first half after a fortunate deflection off of a defender, but his shot was sent wide.
Virginia Wesleyan recorded a shot off of a corner five minutes into the second half that was handled by sophomore keeper Thomas Viscuso. Viscuso had four saves on the night. The next 15 minutes saw Zach Whelan and Shalita each put shots on-net, both saved by the Marlins keeper.
In the 75th minute, Benji Velasquez found the crossbar off of a set-piece, shortly followed by a shot sent wide by Cesar Acosta.
The rain-slickened Shellenberger Field saw seven total cards in the contest, including two red cards assessed to Virginia Wesleyan's Josh Condit and Lynchburg's Manzi Shalita after a scuffle in the Hornets box.
With 6:33 left in the contest, an unsuccessful clearance led to a screaming shot that found the back of the net giving Virginia Wesleyan the lead 1-0.
The final five minutes saw three Hornet shots attempts, including one off the foot of keeper Viscuso with 14 seconds on the clock. The Marlin defense held strong securing them the 1-0 victory.
The Hornets (10-2-2, 4-1-1 ODAC) play Ferrum on Shellenberger field on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.
