Keough powers women's volleyball past Guilford in five

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg women's volleyball sophomore Kailey Keough dominated with 26 kills in the five-set victory over Guilford Wednesday night.

Her performance is tied for the second-most kills in a single match by a Lynchburg player. Keough tied Sydney Frink's effort from 2018. Beth Carter holds Lynchburg's single-set record with 29 in 2001.

The Hornets took the first two sets from the Quakers to open the match. Keough had six kills in both the first and second sets without an error. Bree Spainhour was also in double-digits by the third set with 10. She finished the night with 16 point-enders on .268 hitting, also marking a career-high for the sophomore from King, N.C.

The Quakers took the next two sets to force a tiebreaker. However, Lynchburg had several chances to end the night early in the fourth. Facing a possible set point at 24-21, Spainhour, Ava Meinhardt, and Jaina Leek tallied kills to tie things up 24-24. The fourth set saw seven more ties before the Quakers took it 33-31.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead in the tiebreaker. Sydney Phillips put Lynchburg up 9-3 with a service ace. Leek had another kill in the fifth set to get to three on four attempts. Keough registered two kills on the final two points to secure the win for the Hornets.

It was Lynchburg's fourth five-set match of the year and second win in a five-setter this season.

Defensively, Keough also tallied 13 digs surpassed only by 18 from Cassi Blackmore. Leek added 10 digs and 31 assists to her evening. Mya Green also handed out 31 helpers.

The Hornets celebrated Princess Salifou's career as the lone senior before the match. She had seven kills on the night and increased her career-total to 468.

Lynchburg (9-10, 6-6 ODAC) has five nonconference matches remaining on the schedule beginning with Catholic on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
