Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team avenged its Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal loss to Hampden-Sydney in 2022 with a 3-0 victory over the Tigers in the quarterfinals on Saturday night.
The No. 23-ranked and No. 2-seeded Hornets hosted the No. 7-seeded Tigers for the second year in a row in the ODAC tournament's opening match. The Hornets fell to the Tigers 1-0 a season ago, spoiling their regular-season title.
The Hornets struck first off a corner kick in the 16th minute. It was already Lynchburg's fifth corner kick of the night when Manzi Shalita sent the cross in. The pass was intended for Enrique Morales, but the ball missed his head and ricocheted off a Hampden-Sydney player's head instead and into the goal.
The Tigers nearly found a quick equalizer on the other end of the field. A long throw-in went untouched and landed in front of Lynchburg's goal line behind Thomas Viscuso. Benjamin Velasquez cleared the ball out of harm's way after the first bounce and preserved Lynchburg's lead.
Luke Mega doubled Lynchburg's lead late in the second half. He made a quick finish off a cross from Reid Rouse. It was Mega's ninth goal of the season and 53rd of his career.
Fischer Daniel created his own scoring opportunity by beating a defender in front of the goal for Lynchburg's third goal of the night.
Viscuso made two saves in the second half to seal Lynchburg's 10th shutout of the year.
Lynchburg (13-3-2, 6-2-1 ODAC) hosts No.-3 seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
