Mega scores 50th goal in draw with No. 2 Mary Washington

Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw with No. 2-ranked Mary Washington Saturday evening.

Luke Mega scored his 50th-collegiate goal in the draw for the 24th-ranked Hornets. He is the third Lynchburg men's soccer player to reach the milestone joining Lynchburg Hall of Famers Bob Coote '76 (98 goals) and Helmut Werner '61 (80). Mega is also the seventh men's soccer player in the 49-year history of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to score 50 goals. He is tied with Virginia Wesleyan's Mike McFarland for the sixth-most in ODAC history. Virginia Wesleyan's Brandon Massie holds the record with 57.

Mega netted career-goal No. 50 in the 6th minute Saturday night to opening the scoring against the 2022 NCAA semifinalists. The Eagles knotted the score late in the first half however getting past Viscuso who had already made three saves.

Chris Bovo, the hero from Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Shenandoah, came through once more for the Hornets in the 49th. After a long throw in a few yards from the corner flag, Mary Washington was unable to clear the ball out of trouble. After two failed clears, Bovo ran onto a third slow-rolling clear attempt and tucked the go-ahead score into the bottom-right corner of the goal. It was Bovo's third goal of his freshman campaign tying him with Pat Figaro for third on the team's scoring leaderboard.

Bovo's potential game-winner only held up for seven minutes until Sammy Amorose retied the game 2-2.

Viscuso made three more saves after Mary Washington's equalizer, getting him to a career-high seven stops. Lynchburg conceded twice for the first time since its 2-1 loss to CNU on Sept. 2.

However, the Hornets remain unbeaten since that early-season contest with the Captains extending their unbeaten streak to 10 matches.

Lynchburg (9-1-2, 3-0-1 ODAC) played its final nonconference match of the regular season and returns to ODAC competition on Wednesday, Oct. 11 against Randolph.
