Four men's soccer players score first-collegiate goals

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team emerged victorious over Hood Saturday afternoon using six different goal scorers.

Four of the scorers for the Hornets, Ayden Cass, Chris Bovo, Chris Wiley, and Jacson Shepherd, recorded their first-collegiate goals in the 6-0 win.

Despite the quartet of newcomers to the stat sheet, Luke Mega notched his fourth goal of the season and third via penalty kick in the 29th minute.

Shortly after, at 30:56, Ayden Cass added to the lead with another unassisted goal, extending the lead to 2-0. The Lynchburg offense continued to pressure Hood, and at 36:17, Chris Bovo scored an unassisted goal, taking the score to 3-0 in favor of Lynchburg.

In the second half, starting goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso made way for Noah Gregory in goal. Alex Derstine also got time in between the pipes during the second half as the Hornets submitted their fifth clean sheet of the season.

The Hornets also doubled their lead during the second half beginning with a goal from Manzi Shalita. Benjamin Velasquez served in a free kick, Zach Whelan headed it to Shalita, and the senior scissor kicked it into the back of the net earning Velasquez and Whelan assists.

Just 41 seconds later, Chris Wiley added another goal with an assist from Cass, stretching the lead to 5-0. Shepherd capped off Lynchburg's impressive performance with an unassisted goal at 82:39, sealing the victory with a final score of 6-0 with a free kick from just outside of the box.

Lynchburg dominated the shot count for the second-straight match, registering a total of 30 shots with 14 on target. Hood managed only three shots, with one on target and Gregory making the only Lynchburg save. The Hornets also controlled the corner kick battle, earning 10 corner kicks compared to Hood's two. Combined with the 3-0 win over Greensboro Friday, Lynchburg has outshot its opponents 55-5.

Lynchburg (5-1) begins conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. when the team visits Hampden-Sydney.
