Box Score Salem, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team took Roanoke down to the wire Friday night but fell in five sets.
Three Hornets put down double-digit kills, and Ava Meinhardt continued her strong play in the middle with four block assists.
Roanoke took a marathon-first set 30-28 despite six different Hornets registering kills.
The Hornets led the whole time during a 25-20 victory in the second, and Tori Williamson totaled four kills as the Hornets took a 2-1 lead after the third. Williamson finished with 11 kills and her second-career match with double-digit kills. She previously recorded 10 against Wooster in five sets. Bree Spainhour and Kailey Keough both had three kills in Lynchburg's 25-22 victory in the third. Spainhour led the team with 14 at the end of the night, and Keough ended up with 10.
Mya Green dished out a season-best 30 assists as Spainhour, Williamson, and Keough racked up a majority of Lynchburg's kills as the team hit .120 on the night. Green also came up with 19 digs, but it was Cassi Blackmore leading the way defensively as usual as the sophomore picked up 30 digs. Keough secured her third double-double of the year with 10 digs to pair with her 10 point-enders.
The Hornets never led in the tiebreaker set despite a near-heroic performance from Meinhardt. The freshman added three kills to her ledger in the final set and disrupted the Maroon offense with her presence in the middle. The Hornets tied things up at 11 with Meinhardt at the line for the serve, but the Maroons rallied four-straight points to seal the deal. Roanoke's head coach Blair Trail earned her 400th victory in the process.
Lynchburg (3-6, 0-3 ODAC) pays a visit to Ferrum on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m.
