Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season in a noisy, Turner Gymnasium Tuesday night beating Southern Virginia 3-0.
The Hornets dominated all three sets in their home opening match, with final scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-18 getting 11 kills from Kailey Keough and nine digs from Cassi Blackmore.
Lynchburg entered the match after a long road trip and looking to halt Southern Virginia's two-match winning streak. At the onset, both teams went point-for-point keeping things close.
Keough helped Lynchburg take the lead in the first set with great ball placement. Midway through the first set, Keough had a dominant kill putting the Hornets ahead 17-14 assisted by Jaina Leek. Keough was a major factor for the Hornets in all three sets, finishing the evening with 3.67 kills per set and raising her season average to 2.88. She also hit a season-high .348 on the night.
Junior setter Mya Green secured the first-set win for the Hornets by going on a serving run. Green ended the night with four aces, and the Hornets collected 11 aces in total with Keough also racking up four aces.
The second set of the match was also back and forth until Keough had a momentum-shifting kill, bringing Lynchburg within one point, 9-8. Southern Virginia struggled with several errors, and the Hornets pulled away. Bree Spainhour finished out the second set with two kills, giving Lynchburg the 25-20 win.
The final set of the match was all Lynchburg, with Princess Salifou leading the charge. The Hornets led by as many as 10 in the last set, and the lone senior connected on three kills in the final set. She secured match point on an assist from Kyrie Thibodeau giving the Hornets the 25-18 set win and 3-0 match sweep. Salifou finished with four kills overall and three block assists.
Thibodeau recorded two assists, an ace, and two digs in the final set. Green led the way dishing out nine assists overall, and also earned a kill.
Lynchburg (1-3) travels to Harrisonburg, Va. on Saturday, Sept. 9 for a neutral-site match against Dickinson College (1-2) at 1 p.m.
