Salem, Va. -- Three University of Lynchburg men's soccer players scored during the shutout over Covenant Friday evening.
Luke Mega got the scoring started for the Hornets at Kerr Stadium on Roanoke College's campus. In the 12th minute, Mega ran on to a long ball sent in from behind the midfield line. He missed the first touch as he split two Covenant defenders, accelerated to catch up to the high bounce, and settled it with his chest, and fired an arcing shot over the goalkeeper.
Just a minute later, Pat Figaro and Chris Wiley worked together along the far sideline doubling Lynchburg's lead. Figaro played it to the freshman, and Wiley quickly got it back to a streaking Figaro, who finished it for his second goal of the season.
Figaro transferred in from Division-I Radford University ahead of the season where he played in 25 matches and registered one assist. His goal made way for Wiley's first-collegiate point with the assist on the play.
Mega tallied another shot in the 34th minute, but it was saved, and sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso made a save on the only shot that came his way in the first half a minute later.
The Hornets added insurance by way of a Josh Auger goal in the 64th minute. Cesar Acosta assisted on the play.
Viscuso made one more save in the second half before making way for Noah Gregory in goal. Gregory made two saves to preserve Lynchburg's second shutout of the year.
The Hornets host Oglethorpe all the way from the Sunshine State on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. for Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field debut in 2023. Sunday's tilt kicks off a three-match homestand for the Hornets.
