Hornets Host Christopher Newport For Senior Day

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team closes out its nonconference slate when it welcomes Christopher Newport to Shellenberger Field on Saturday, October 26 at 7 p.m. The match will serve as the team's senior day, honoring Alex Derstine, Pat Figaro, Trevor Miller and Cesar Acosta.

The Hornets (8-2-4) have been clicking since the start of October, outscoring opponents by a margin of 10-1 over the last seven games. The Lynchburg defense has paved the way to a seven-game unbeaten streak, allowing opposing offenses just 5.9 shots per game, which tops the ODAC. The Hornets are the only team in the conference with single-digit goals allowed. The team's seven conceded goals in 14 games this season is the best in the ODAC and ranks eighth in NCAA DIII. Lynchburg sits atop the conference standings with 20 points in nine games, with Virginia Wesleyan trailing with 19 points in eight games. 

Last time out, Lynchburg scored twice in the first half to secure a 2-0 victory against Hampden-Sydney. Freshman William Casey netted the first goal in the 25th minute, and fifth year Zach Whelan followed up less than four minutes later to double the Hornets' advantage. The squad held Hampden-Sydney to just three shots all contest, the fifth occasion this season in which Lynchburg's foe was held to three-or-less shots. 

Christopher Newport owns a 5-4-4 overall record coming into Saturday's match. The Captains have dropped four of their last five outings. Most recently, CNU earend a 1-1 draw with Salisbury on Saturday, October 19. Manzi Silbo is the leading goal scorer for the Captains with four goals in 13 games.

Following this weekend's competition, the men's soccer team will close out the regular season at Shenandoah on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
